Adventure Summary
After spending another fitful night in the domain of the Spider, the group decides to continue their reconaisance of the Spiderfell. The party notices the lack of attention to them. Based on Legend and Myth, a group of humans this deep into the SpiderFell should have attracted much attention. Cautiously the group proceeds. By midday, they can hear gnolls shouting nearby. Using stealth the group moves to see what is causing the commotion. A dozen gnolls are prodding, threatening and otherwise trying to presuade a large two headed ettin to get back on the path and get moving. The gnolls are easily dealt with and during the fight, the ettin runs off. The party catches up with it in time to see it kill two fleeing gnolls. Sensing the ettin, normally not very bright, may not be an enemy today, the group tries to reason with it. The Ettin are very angry and it wants to go home (back west/north?). It tells the group it was conscripted into the Spider's massing army, and the gnolls were late, hence their displeasure. The party keeps its word and the Ettin strides off into the forest.
The group now, on a fairly wide trail--almost a road, continues to the west toward the massing army. On the way they are attacked by some Gargantuan spiders that literally break through trees to get to the party. However, Heidrek calls upon the lightning and between that and the fighting prowess of Rayad, William, Menzak and Ludwig the spiders are killed.
Contining into some rougher country, the path leads around and over several hills and rivines. The party hears something large splashing through the bottom of a rivine, heading right for them. Heidrek, tries a lightning bolt and to his (and the group's horror), it actually causes the Shambling mound to grow! Even the magic blades barely hurt the Mounds, several members are hurt badly, including Rayad who got more than he bargained for and lost consciousness.
That night, the group can see a reddish haze to the west--the SpiderFell is on Fire! Based on where they think they are, the group concludes that the Iron Guard of Ghoere has attacked the Spider and set the Forest aflame. Making beeline back to the Roesonian border, the party regroups at William's village. They rest up, Heidrek retrieves the horses from Northlake and messages are sent back to the capital. Two days later an official messenger is sent with dispatches for Ghoere and a writ allowing the party to act as ambassadors of Roesone to Ghoere. The party makes preparations to enter Ghoere the next day.
