Seventh Sea League

Our basic plan is to have our own inhouse (so to speak) Seventh Sea League. Exactly how it will all play out is still under discussion, but here are the current rules:

Basics
The basic purpose of this league is to have a good time. In all cases where the rules are stopping that, they can be set aside by a majority vote of the players. Our intention is to establish a play environment where players don't have to (and in fact can't) spend enormous amounts of money amassing huge collections of cards. We accomplish this by limiting the play environment to a fixed number of cards and boosters.

Formats
The league can be played using a variety of formats:
Sealed: Players are given a single starter and a number of boosters. Where possible, no two players are given the same starter.
Expansion League: Modeled after sports teams, this version allows each player to retain a percentage of his current card pool and then turn in the rest to a draft pool. The draft pool could be constructed in a number of ways, including:
Random Distribution: Each player gets out as many cards as he put in, but they are distributed randomly.
Draft: Players draft cards in reverse order of their previous season's finish (so last goes first).

Season
Seasons run for a number of sessions or until a certain date as agreed before the season commences.

Trading
Trading within the league is permitted; trading outside the league is not. All trades should be conducted at League Nights and in such a way as to not interfere with games in progress or in a way that delays games from starting. Most trades should be conducted before 8 or after 11.

League Sessions
League play sessions are on Thursdays (see the calendar). Play should begin by 8. Unless agreed, no game can begin after 11. All League sessions will be announced at least 1 week in advance. Additional dates can be added by 2/3 vote of League members.

Booty
Players receive one sovereign for being on-time, ready to play before 8:00 at League Sessions.
Players receive one sovereign for every game they play. Winners receive an additional sovereign for each opponent they beat (In a two-player game the winner gets two sovereigns; in a three player, he gets three). The loser(s) only ever get one.
Each night will have one "Whale of a Tale " as voted by the other players. The Tale is the most interesting, exciting, unusual, or humorous play of the night. Embellishment of the Tale in the telling is permitted, but you should stick to the facts. The person responsible for the Tale gets one sovereign.
At the end of each night, point totals for the evening will be compared and everyone who has the highest total will be deemed the "Scourge of the Sea" and will get one sovereign. In the following weeks, the first person to defeat the "Scourge" gets one sovereign. As long as the Scourge goes undefeated, the price remains and is cumulative, so if someone is the Scourge a second week without being defeated, he becomes worth two sovereigns to the first one to defeat him.

Absence
Any player who provides notice in advance that they can't make it on a given night will receive one less point for play than the player who scores the least points that night.
If you just don't show up, tough, unless there's some kind of an emergency.

Tardiness
Any player who provides notice in advance that they will be late based on a medical or other necessary appointment (not TV!) shall be eligible to receive the bonus point for on-time provided he is no later than he expected to be and did not engage in other activities which increased his tardiness.

Atmosphere
During league nights, atmosphere is encouraged, pirate clothes and garb are encouraged as are appropriate beverages, snacks and lingo. Challenges, side bets, and assorted trash talk are also welcome but shouldn't get carried away.

Spoils
Sovereign can be used to purchase additional boosters. Based on our expected burn rate, the current exchange is five sovereigns each.
At the end of each season, the player who has earned the most sovereigns is deemed the "Pirate King" and is allowed to pick one card from the promos and other special cards which have been received by the league.

Commissioner
The League shall have a commissioner who oversees the sovereigns and their exchange and makes rulings on league rules as necessary.
