Winter's Harvest

Miners Beware

Prelude

Within the Spine of the world:
"Dirk, are you all right?"
"I bleed, but I will live. Next time we take them on open ground, together."
Southern edge of the Inland Sea.
"My lord, the barbarians speak of Elves to the south."
"So, the Serfs still live. At last we will have our rightful place ruling over them"
With in the Cinnibar Mines:
"You should not dig so deep Imperial, You know not what you might wake."
"Whatever it is, it craves the heat, I can only hope to find an ally from the cold."
Before the doors of the Gates of Endless Winter.
"I know what they are now Lord. In the first age the Devas gave up the part of them that was immortal when they finished their labor creating the world. These cold priests, they do the work of ending the world. They gain the gift of immortality for each new gate they open. Nine gates have been opened, and two of the openers have fallen."
"If only I could tell the Closers what they face."

Player's Perspective

The group, having recovered the two artifacts they sought, began heading north to the Cinnibar mines to see what they could do about freeing the slaves there. Along the way they passed through the elven lands where they were stopped and asked for help by one of the elves.

Apparently a group of goblins had come through and caught him and his friends unawares. They took the other two prisoner and were heading back to their fortress. He couldn't stop them alone and wouldn't ask the humans for help, but asked Lazarus to lead the humans into the path of the marauders in hopes the elves would be freed.

After a full out cross-country run to get ahead of them, the group laid out a hasty ambush plan. The plan proved too hasty as the goblins quickly spotted Caradoc in his full plate hiding amidst the trees. Their ambush ruined, the party leapt into action. Several minutes of fighting and one fallen tree left Karadoc and his men the victors.

The half-elf who led the group and his hobgoblin cronies all bore the same marks and similar livery. When none of them proved willing to talk, they were put to the sword and the group continued its quest after returning the two elves to their decidedly non-grateful people.

Further travel brought them into a meeting with a caravan headed south. Apparently the miners were now being used as guides and were picking a path south for the minister of the mines. The Kordan would have left save that their women and children were still held hostage. After some discussion it was agreed that the party would help the caravan reach the pass then head back to help the Kordan free their women and children.

They headed back to the first of the tears they'd encountered, which had recently been retaken and much more heavily fortified. Finding a secret path in they took it and found themselves in the heart of the barrow before they were noticed. As they opened the door into the center...
