Winter's Harvest

The North

History and Culture

Originally conquered to quell periodic raids by the northern tribes and to open new markets for trade. There has been a imperial presence in the north for about 200 years, but outside of the towns with Imperial garrisons the people of the north still regard themselves to be at war, waging periodic raids on the smaller towns and constant assaults on tax collectors and auditors. The most recent of these was the Cadderan rebellion 20 years ago, a count of northern descent raised a rebellion in a attempt to control the Cinnabar trade routes, his own son, a Brigadier in the 7th legion led the attack that defeated the rebellion.

The main exports of the north are whale oil and Cinnabar. The whale oil is harvested from the northern parts of the Sea of Storms. Cinnabar, the main ingredient of Firepowder, is mostly mined in the Restless Mountains by slave labor.

The original human inhabitants of the north are the Wein and the Norns.

The Norn are a dark skinned almost oriental, mystical race of deer herders who migrate from the Norn hills to the Restless mountain, as the Norn sell deer meat to the Cinnabar mines they are left alone by slavers, as they don’t seem to have anything else worth taking they are left alone by the empire.

The Wein are a brawny red haired race that inhabits the farmlands and northern hills in-between the Spine of the world and the Restless Mountains. Their presence there required that the empire to conquer them to secure the Cinnabar mines. The Wein are organized in Clans who worship animal totems, and societies that are organized for various purposes.

The Nobility of the Clans are Weres of their totems, each clan raises and trains dire version of their totems, both the Weres and the living Totems are outlawed in the Empire.
