Delve Diary

Part One

Half the problem with this delve was figuring out how the damn stuff worked. The other problem is that we're delvers, not engineers and planning the details of digging a tunnel really isn't our strong suit. Our plan, if you can call it that, was to build a tower in the middle of a huge cavern and then make the orcs cross a killing field to reach us. For reasons that escape me now, we thought we needed a couple of bridges in and out of the main area.

Things went reasonably well and we were well on our way to executing our plan when the first set of orcs attacked. Of course, there were only 10 of them and they were more big than bright, but still, nine of them died. Our knockers continued to dig and about 12 hours had elapsed.

We converted part of our little keep into a workroom and continued, the sound of knockers assembling floor spikes beating out a lullaby for us. An hour later, the next group of orcs arrived.

This one was larger, more than twenty, and better equipped. Like the first group their approach was somewhat cautious. They attempted to use one of the doors we'd installed as cover, but Kal and Hastor set it ablaze and changed their minds. Eventually, they got to feeling brave enough and made reasdy to charge the tower. Their chieftain suddenly appeared in our midst even as too many others rushed forward. Grot made short work of the chief and the others were set ablaze by oil as they charged across the bridge.

Two who had made their way to the ground were also killed; in all nearly a full score of orcs was killed before we turned them away and they ran screaming down the tunnels for home.

Part Two

The number of orcs and the danger increased as did their intelligence. When the wave of thirty came they were repulsed with fire, gigantic pits and plenty of smackdown from Grot. We were nearly killed when Grot's enthusiastic charge led us into grave danger.

Luckily we escaped, but only barely and lived to face the wave of 40, enhanced by the many survivors of the wave of 30.

The wave of 40 was subtle and attempted many tricks to reach us, including building an impossibly large stone ramp and sliding it into an improbably position, tunneling over our heads, and direct assault.

In the end we were forced to dig a hidey-hole and retreat. The orcs stormed the safe room and emptied the chest then began ransacking the tower and the surrounding areas looking for us.

When they finally found us, they first tried to turn Grot to their side, but his loyalty to his team was too great and they attacked. They might have succeeded had the knockers not been there to maintain a fire and keep them burnt up as they jumped down to attack us.

As the bell sounded we were restored but our gold was missing. Presby insisted we were supposed to protect the gold since the gold left in the chest was to be ours. This technicality infuriate Jarkwin who insisted that a formal protest be filed. In the end, like many killer delve masters, the protest fell on deaf ears.
