Dictionary

Over the course of time, certain words and phrases take on specific meanings to those who understand them. This list represents the lexicon of our gaming group, circa 1997. Needless to say, updates are requested

adventure (n)
an alleged scenario created by the GM.

Adventuring (v)
  1. rolling dice for several hours and ignoring them (c.f. gaming).
  2. What characters try to do when they aren't being fucked over by NPC's, vindictive GM's, or vengeance characters (q.v.).

Al (n,v)
  1. A character who has wandered off in defiance of the plan.
  2. To wander off and be killed or incapacitated while alone.
Origin: Al Oakes(brother to Mick and a once frequent gaming participant) characters were frequently killed in just such a way. His character's lone wolf tendencies approached the suicidal.

B-teamer (n)
  1. A player who can not catch a thrown bottle opener (yes, we've been gaming that long).
  2. a player whose hit or miss attendance is more miss than hit. The exact ratio of attendance varies depending on the reason for not attending and the perceived loss of party capability caused by their absence.
  3. a player whose antics you'd rather not endure.

Base Dave (n)
An addition system which yields unpredictable (and apparently wrong) results. Very useful for character generation.
Origin: Dave frequently suffers fits of mathnesia where he suddenly can't add simple numbers.

bookshelf (n)
  1. A piece of furniture designed to hold books. Sometimes used to hold videos, cds, or other flat objects.
  2. Any flat relatively stable horizontal surface at Steve's house which has been covered (or is about to be covered) in books.

braaked (v)
Generally, any sort of shaming while drunk. More specifically, subjected to a bukakke experience while drunk.
Origin: One evening while John, who played Braak, was not in attendance Tom and Joe (Vance and Jaigger respectively) took great delight in describing Braak being placed on a party wagon while passed out drunk.

Bullshit (n)
Swearing when Mrs. Donohue (c.f.) can hear it.

Buying boots (v)
  1. Passing the GM a note for totally unimportant actions which neither are nor need to be kept secret.
  2. Jumping the "GM Attention" line by passing a note rather than waiting your turn

Campaign (n)
  1. A series of adventures in which the same group of characters are humiliated and defeated by a recurring cast of NPC's.
  2. A carefully scripted story which the GM intends to tell regardless of the players actions.

Canary (Adj)
Used to discribe a player that is the breaking point for the DM or player completely losing it during the game.
Origin: During Aredel II, a player was dubbed as Tom's canary by Joe during the game...little does he know.....

Canoeing (n)
The practice of delaying the game by discussing side topics, especially scouting and/or canoeing but also including SCA, work, and other games.
Origin: Oft-repeated stories of canoeing the rifle river as boy scouts.

Chaos Factor (n)
a player or character whose participation in the game makes things unpleasant for other players and/or characters through his insistence on either being everywhere and doing everything or on pursuing goal which are counter to those of the party in general.

Chaotic Everywhere (n)
  1. Tendency of some players to keithaport (c.f.) continuously.
  2. Phrase use to denigrate players who command more game time due to superior play.

Chhht (adj)
Sound used to indicate that what follows is being broadcast using a walkie-talkie, wrist-radio or cellphone.

Classic (adj)
Used to describe a movie which Steve (and most gamers) enjoys but which Kristie will only watch once, usually under protest (see Video Vulture for examples).
Origin: When Steve says "It's a classic" even strong men weep.

D.F. (abbr.)
Deemed Fucked. A character or situation which is engineered by a player and is likely to leave the other characters in a much worse condition than they were in prior to the engineering of the situation. Situations and characters sometimes progress from DF to PF (q.v.).

A ranger with a bow.

Deus Ex Tactica (n, v)
Process by which monsters, even unintelligent ones, demonstrate vastly superior tactics when required by the GM.

Dramatic Piss (n)
The practice of slowing down the pace of the game and increasing the frustration of the players by stopping to piss right in the midst of a battle or (for maximum effect), right after calling for saving throws.
Origin: Mick frequently announced that players should "roll a d20" while he headed for the bathroom.

draylus (n)
NPC with information whom the players recognize as wearing the badge but ignore anyhow.
Origin: Shattered Vale featured Draylus, an NPC who knew a lot but was never asked questions by the PCs.

Eighteen to Parry (n)
An attempt to prevent other characters from engaging in activities which any sane person would recognize as automatic.
Origin: Joe did not want to be slapped even though he was clearly flat-footed.

Ephemeral Gamemastering syndrome. (n)
A classic condition of announceing a game, getting everyone to make up charater, running about two times at most, if they make it as far as running at all, then dropping the entire game.

exonerate (v)
To take another gamer's seat. Ideally it should be accomplished after he arrives and while he's doing something for the good of the group.
Origin: Dave went for sodas one night and when he came back, someone had taken his chair. We're not sure what word he meant to use, but he actually accused the guilty game of "exonerating his seat"

Experience points (n)
  1. The last chance for a vindictive GM to punish the players for failing to follow his script.
  2. Mythical sum which is always too low unless you're the GM in which case you were "more than generous"
  3. What your character loses if you try to adventure while the GM is canoeing.

Favorite (n)
  1. A character who has the favor of the GM and is, therefore, rendered an MNPC or, in extreme cases, a TNPC
  2. Insult hurled at any character who seems to be achieving his goals faster than you are.

Fight (n)
1) What occurs immediately prior to the session's end in any of Tom's games.
2) Something the party does amongst itself after about the 4 session of any game. (cf party fight)

Fuck You (n)
Phrase used to signify that you would like to continue the witty repartee but are basically out of wit.

1. Setting that allows the GM to tap into shared memories as a shortcut in the setting.
2. Reason to screw over annoying players (Hey, I didn't want to kill/screw/steal from you, it's the genre)

grig (v)
To pincushion a flying character with numerous projectiles. Typically arrows are used, although other non-magical weapons could also be used. In a perfect grig, the flier falls. (grigs, grigged)

haybales (n)
Spot where inattentive party members look for opponents, regardless of setting, genre, or specific adventure
Origin: Steve uttered this immortal phrase upon awaking from one of his pre-vader box naps.

An excuse given to authority figures as to why you are beating the crap out of somebody.

Hooligan (n)
A gamer who has not been particularly mean or discourteous lately.

Howey (v)
To boast and/or remind the GM of your characters amazing combat prowess every time the dice are rolled
Origin: John has a tendency to be rather proud of his bonuses and concerned that they might be overlooked.

Info beating (v)
When the GM supplies so much background information that the players can no longer pick out what is pertinet to the session let alone the campaign.

Jaboo (n)
The tendency of a player to become more power and/or more irascible when under the control of the DM due to the player's absence

jaigger (n)
Derisive term used for someone who uses a mock logical argument to defend an essentially untenable position.
Origin: See the Volturnus campaign.

Jasper (v)
The practice of placing your character in the best possible position to avoid injury immediately after being told how much damage has been taken.
Origin: Joe's character Jasper was a master of this tactic.

Joe (v)
To insist that something is better even though it really just sucks in a different way.

Joe1 PC (n)
A character who is DF (or PF) by the other players, but who survives by allowing the gamemaster to effectively run a character in his own campaign.

A wizard who specializes in Evocation.

The practice of taking a piece of pizza and leaving the toppings on the cardboard for another player to enjoy.

Keithaportation (n)
The tendency of certain players to insist that their character be at the center of the current action regardless of his previous position.

Kiddie table (n)
Punishment inflicted for arriving late on a night when many B-teamers are present.
Origin: When there weren't enough seats at the pool table, some players would have to sit at the key table.

Kristie Classic (n)
  1. A chick flick
  2. An otherwise fine movie ruined by Kristie's insistence that it be watched in some unusual way (like with the commentary track on)

Laggie (n)
lame ass gamer who hangs out in Steve's basement. Generally applies to those who are mean or discourteous to Steve's dogs, wife or both.

Leader (n)
  1. Person who would like to be in charge if it didn't require decision making
  2. Person who is to blame for everything that goes wrong on an adventure.

Loc-Nar (n)
A desirable magic item. Typically very powerful and poorly defined in terms of game effects.
Example: Give me the Loc-Nar.

Phrase invoked by players to call attention the gamemaster's inattention to or non-compliance with either the game rules or common sense.
Origin: Mike's shadowrun game where Joe's hovercraft suddenly disappeared.

Lou (n)
Asshole
Origin: While Troop 1373 was teaching the Oatly Children the game "Asshole" when our troops went Whitewater rafing and splunking in PA. Lou was the "Asshole"(dealer) almot the entire trip.

An NPC who possesses the exact combination of skills, power, information and equipment to completely humiliate or defeat the party as required by the gamemaster.

Mickiplication (n)
Tendency of the number of monsters to increase exponentially every time the Gm is asked for a count. Sometimes applies to distances and even the number of times a campaign has been run.

A game or adventer which includes the players being stripped of most of their worldly possessions.
Origin: Mick was famous for adventures which left the party naked chained to the wall somewhere.

Word used to describe every blow in some games.

To beat a dead horse.

Min-max (v)
1. To use a combination of rulebooks and abilities to assure that your character always has the maximum ability while paying the lowest cost. True min-maxing requires that your character possess abilities, traits,skills, and equipment which are totally alien to his nature (for example, a juggling warrior who uses the skill only to catch thrown weapons).
2. To adjust your character concept based solely on combat abilities gained.

1 (v) To pointlessly remind players of special powers/rules they are already aware of.

The ultimate goal of all canoeing attempts; the players become so frustrated looking for an adventure that they attack each other to avoid falling asleep.

1. Rolling your dice in a small box so that nobody else can see them and instantly declaring "Made it!" right after moving the box (and shifting the dice.)
2. Using dice that can only be read from 5 inches away.

Noun: a player who is taking too long to play, particularly in a card game (usage: C'mon Rich, some time today!).

Any game in which dynamite and other explosives play more than a minor role.
Origin: Tom's Werewolf game saw many uses of dynamite including one where a case of it mysteriously appeared in the back of a truck the character's had been riding in for a week.

the box which helps steve keep his airway open while sleeping.
Origin: Steve's CPAP machine was deemed the vader box because it helps him breathe just like Darth's helmet.

Those people who have nothing better to do than to belittle the names of others, while being ignorant enough to neglect the legal ramifications leading to future incarceration brought on by legal actions.
