Forgotten Flask
Hey, mind if I steal your pouch?Summary
It was a good night for drinking: Ferric was at the Shadowed Tankard, Peeter was at the Rusty Goblet, and Speaks was at the Forgotten Flask. Each of them had their own errand, but Ferric's was the most urgent.
His uncle had sent him to learn more about the contest of the basement of the Rusty Goblet and to then investigate some coordinates from the air to see what might lie below. After a nice dinner, he headed down towards the Rusty Goblet.
Meanwhile, a scallywag in a red cloak tried to rob Speaks. Unfortunately, the wanak noticed his attempt and threw him to the ground. When the bouncer noticed, he investigated. Luckily, he spoke wanak and believed Speaks when he said the man had tried to rob him. He clubbed the red-cloaked man in the head and sent him on his way.
After some negotiation, Peeter purchased a map from a man named Kalvan which led to a place called the Caves of Mourning. As he and Kalvan had a bite to eat there was a scream outside. Peeter rushed out to find a man hanging over the edge of the wall by his cloak. As he arrived the man passed out; he healed him, then pulled him to the surface.
The man's name was Allister and he explained he'd been clubbed by a Wanak at the Forgotten Flask. He further explained he was on a mission from the emperor to investigate sabotaged airships. He suspected the Wanak were behind it. The two of them decided to go see what was happening.
Meanwhile, Ferric had made his way to the Forgotten Flask where he befriended Speaks and convinced him to go on an adventure with him. They left, having been joined by the bouncer Branden who was translating for them.
Peeter spotted the wanak and asked if it was the one who'd attacked Alister earlier. He didn't answer directly, but he charged the wanak calling him names.
Ferric stood up for his friend and there was a terrible duel with neither of them seeming very skilled. Finally, Alister inflicted a scratch on Ferric who acknowledged his defeat. As Alister walked away, he dropped dead of poison.
Ferric and Speaks quickly retreated to the Rusty Goblet leaving Peeter to deal with the guards. The guards spoke with Peeter, noticed that Allister had been poisoned and then tossed him over the edge into the death pit. A piece of paper fell out of his pouch and Peeter managed to pick it up discretely. It said only Caves of Mourning.
He rejoined his friends who had made their way into the basement. Randall, the spymaster, was trying to get information from Speaks without much luck. They compared notes, Randall explained that the Caves were a spot where those affected by the Change first tried to hide and were later left to die.
In the morning, they boarded an airship called Morning Glory and went to examine the location. They had three different clues pointing them there and, despite knowing someone was sabotaging ships, none of them thought to check their own ship. They had barely left the city when a smaller ship rose from the canopy to attack them with a ballista.
The smaller ship blew a hole through their airbag and then the two ships collided. Their captain tried to steer clear but their ship was damaged. The two ships became entangled and both fell from the sky and into the canopy, stopping only when the ropes of the ships snagged on trees.
Most of the pirate crew was killed and only the captain survived. Peeter provided healing to those who were injured and they set about repairing the ships. They quickly figured they could combine the two gas bags and combine the two gondolas into one. The hardest part was filling it with hot air, but they managed to build a large enough fire and Ferric helped with his magic.
Nights were dangerous and both nights they were attacked. One night a snake took the rival captain whole and the second night some kind of apeman attacked them and was killed.
At the end of the third day, they could have launched the ship, but they had no way to keep it afloat since they had no way to keep a fire burning once they were airborne.
None of them was happy, but Ferric was despondent at the notion they'd have to enter the caves and look for a pot or cauldron to hold their fire.
