The Hook

The party finds the Rusty Goblet closed and no sign of any of the staff.
The Captain of the City Watch is there waiting

Prelude

In the Council Chamber: So they seem capable, are they as pliable as they are foolish?

Except the priest they are a fairly mercenary group. We just need to offer the some money and possibly not even that if we can convince the dwarf.

Summary

As we head down to our favorite tavern, the Rusty Goblet, we find that it has been shut down and all the staff have gone on surprises vacations or other errands. There are three taverns in the lower level closed, but no one knows anymore than that they’ve gone on vacation. We investigated the goblet and it’s pretty much closed and vacant, it’s even clean which is strange.

After leaving we are approached by the guard who tells us we’re needed by the Council. After some mandatory cleaning, we are shown into the council chambers. We only recognize one member, a fat mushroom farmer. They have received a distress call – the dwarves need help, and the Council thinks we’re the ones to render it. Peeter seems dubious and it’s hard to tell if he mistrusts his people or the Marotians more. They eventually agreed to go down for 100 gold. After some debate, the Council also agrees to give them a pass saying what they are doing is legal.

They enter the dungeon with a human guide. He takes them down many passages and stairs. Mordak becomes increasingly nervous as he descends into the earth and is further from the sky. When they come to a large open chasm, he can’t help but take flight despite their destination being down several flights of stairs. It turns out to be unwise, as a creature lurks in the ceiling and suddenly a sticky strand strikes him in the back arresting his flight.

The creature is a cavefisher and it begins to slowly reel Mordak in as Peeter and Speaks shoot at the creature, but it is well-hidden. Mordak spins and is able to slash the cable. The cavefisher moves out from its cave and attacks again. With the creature in plain sight, Speaks and Peeter are better able to see and attack it. It dies before it can finish capturing Mordak. He searches its lair and finds a few copper which he shares with the group. Ferric makes plans to harvest it’s web glands.

They continue down and capture a smallish fire beetle before they run into a dwarf who guards the entrance into the ruins. He swaps the fire beetle for a couple of lanterns and the group continues, passing through a worked door into old ruins. There are statues and frescoes, but they are too worn to be of much help. They explore the ruins which turn out to be an extensive mix of worked stone and lava flows.

At one point they are attacked by carnivorous cockroaches but luckily Mordak sacrifices one of his lanterns and the burning oil drives the creatures off. They do not seem to have any treasure. They continue to explore and in a room with a pond, they find the first of the monsters they were warned about, a vampiric mist. Using mostly missile weapons, they make short work of it and, after checking for treasure, they again move on.

Eventually they pass through what seems to be private apartments for some sort of spellcaster and then they encounter the second monster: it’s short, with jet black skin and horns. Speaks wastes no time and charges the beast grappling it. As he does so, Ferric tries to join him and the two of them are caught in a fiery blast of fire. The creature fights hard, but no to avail as the party proves too much for it.

They return to the caverns of the dwarves and a hero’s welcome.

Quotes

Joe: All this time I thought he was carrying around a multi shot blowpipe, instead he's channeling the music of Zamphear

Guard: Did you guys see a wanak? We got a report of a wanak threatening a young boy.
Peeter: We saw it, the boy was staring at this door and the wanak aked him why, the kid started screaming and ran off. It was nothing.
Ferric: Finally, someone else who doesn't speak Wanak!
Guard: Do you know which Wanak it was?
Peeter: They all look the same to me.
Mordak: Yeah, it's not like they have different outfits.

Joe: I asked him (Mordak) if his name was burlap and he said yes.

Ferric: Are we deep enough that bends will be an issue?
Peeter: We should probably have brought a canary.
Ferric: (looks at Mordak)

Mordak: Are we done yet?
Peeter: I think we'll probably have to kill something first.
Mordak: What about the guard?
Peeter: Probably won't count.

Jim: I steal something else from the guard.
GM: He really doesn't have much left that he wouldn't notice right away.
Jim: I steal his buttons.
GM: His shirt has ties.
Jim: I untie them.

Dwarf: Any trouble?
Peeter: Just a cavefisher at the crevasse.
Dwarf: They don't usually get near the bridge

Peeter: Is this new construction?
Dwarf: It was, then we broke into some ruins.
Ferric: What kind of ruins?
Dwarf: We don't know; every dwarf who has gone in has nearly died.
Peeter: I'll wait here for you guys.

Ferric: Bad touch! Bad touch! I need a wanak.

Ferric: I have healing blood?
Peeter: Next time I get hurt, i'm going to bathe in his blood.

GM: You see a flash of silver in the dark and Mordak collapses.
Joe: Oh no, it's a golfer he's got a birdie.

Steve: I channel for five. Last one.
Joe: Alright Peeter! You're the balm.
