#8: The Map of Death

The Hook

The group sets out to follow the map given to them

Prelude

The Map leads to ruins on a low rise 3 days into the dead lands

Summary

The players were approached by the Mayor and the Captain of the guard. They had a man with them who was part of an adventuring party that had found a long-lost temple in the Doom Lands. He was the sole survivor of the encounter and the town was pressuring him to lead the heroes there to retake the temple and valuable items from the temple.

The heroes were eager, but the survivor was not. He only agreed to guide them if they gave him an equal share of the loot. The heroes reluctantly agreed, unsure if he'd be able to carry his weight.

They followed his guidance for three days of travel before they reached the area where he said they'd find the temple. There were a few moments along the way where the guide's story broke down and it became clear that he was hiding something, but they weren't able to figure out his secret.

They finally arrived at the site of the temple and they found that it was buried in rubble. As they took issue with the guide, they were suddenly attacked by undead on all sides who turned out to be backed by a trio of mercenaries. As the group made quick work of the undead, the mercenaries realized they had been lied to and that they were overmatched. Two of them threw down their weapons and begged for mercy; the third fought on and was killed.

They returned to Doomgate with plans to bring the traitor to justice. As they returned and the gate opened, a large gathering of undead appeared on the road behind them and the triple-gates were suddenly all lifted at once, something that was supposed to be mechanically impossible. Luckily, they were rested and quickly recovered from being surprised. The undead didn't last as long as the sorceror who attacked them and fled. Bornon and Dragan tracked him down only to find that he had already left town.

The two mercenaries decided to throw in their lot with the heroes and plans were made to track down the sorceror who had apparently been behind the whole thing, including forcing their guide to help them by kidnapping his mother.
