Kingdoms - Paruv

Climate:
Known As: Paruvian
Primary Lang: Common, Paru
Capitol City:
Population:
Ruler: Baragon the Corsair

People:

The Paruvian are like the water which surrounds them - mercurial and hard to fathom. They tend not to plan their lives too far ahead because, like the sea, things change.

Brief History:

The island was originally settled by Dinasian sailors who used it as a hideout for a while. Over time it became more and more civilized until it became a kingdom in its own right. When the Dinasians went to a republic, they kingdoms split. There is no real ill-will between the two though.

Culture:

Paruvian culture is the greatest melting pot on Erath. They take the best (and worst) from all over the world and many sailors settle here. It's not unusual to see people who shoudl be bitter rivals stop in for a beer together at a local tavern.

Ruling Structure:

Paruvian rule is by the strongest and best sailor who is usually determined by booty. When a king dies, the contest is on. During these times, it is not usually a good idea to sail through Paruvian waters. The current ruler is Baragon the Corsiar, a famous privateer. He's been in power for nearly fifteen years, which is quite a long time by Paruvian standards.

Economy:

Paruv survives on two things: fish and seamanship. Paruvians eat more fish than any other nation on erath. They are also the best sailors and their ships ply the trade lanes taking chances that any other captain would call foolhardy (or worse). They sell some ships, but a Paruvian ship with a Paruvian captain is still the safest way to travel by sea.

Sub Structure:

Beneath the King is the Council of Captains, which basically oversees the various port towns and shipyards. The Council is notoriously corrupt and many decisions are based on everything but what's best for the people. Luckily Baragon has a veto power and uses it for the most ridiculous decisions.

Technology:

Paruvian shipyards and fishing technology are well ahead of most other nations. They lag somewhat behind in most other areas, but are agressively pursuing improved weapons for their ships.

Arts:

Paruvian art reflects the sea in material and subject. It is usually striking and often quite small as the tools and the piece must be carried aboard ship in many cases.

Fashion:

Paruvians generally favor loud but functional clothing and not much of it. They prefer bright bold colors and aren't afraid to wear things which clash, like stripes with spots and purple and orange.

Politics:

The Council of Captains is rife with intrigue of all sorts. Most Paruvians know at least one member of the Council personally, though how well they know him is often subject to much debate. If a Paruvian claims a Captain owes him a favor, it's probably true.

Orders & Groups:

Sea Guild
The guild exists to promote peaceful existence on the sea between both Paruvian ships and those of other nations.
Seventh Sea
Seventh Sea is a guild of explorers who believe there is a mystical Seventh Sea which leads to the heavens and to treasures beyond imagining. They often sponsor expecditions to distant locales.

Religion:

Pinavious is the state god of Paruv and, while open to many gods, it is difficult to find a Paruvian who does not pay at least lip service to Pinavious.

Current Status:

Paruv is in a state of disarry. Although Baragon survived the attacks, several of his strongest lieutenants and staunchest supporters did not. They are working hard to convince the Council of Kingdoms that they knew nothing of the attacks and are trying to bring the culprits to justice. Some say there must have been collusion from within the Paruvian government in order for the attacks to go so well.

Playing a Paruvian Character:

Common Roles:

Clown: Paruvians rarely take things seriously because they believe they'll change soon enough.

Diplomat: Because of their status as a melting pot, many Paruvians are familiar with different cultures.

Roleplaying Hints:

Nothing is so bad that it won't be different in a minute. Nothing is so good that it won't be different in a minute. In some ways you're happier when things are bad because that means they'll change for the better.

Outlook on other Countries:

Paruvians are friendly and peaceful with most other countries, at least on the surface. Behind the scenes some whisper that ships flying certain flags seem to get hit by pirates more often than others.

Creating a Paruvian Character:

Naming Conventions:

Paruvian names are as varied as the cultures they draw from. It is not uncommon to have a Timorian first and a Kryllian last name for example.
