I play regular diskwars and the only one that I know that has L5R is Dennis mailto:shadowdf47@hotmail.com. We are trying to start a diskwars league at Neutral Ground on Saturday's. I'm not sure when the next day is that we will be there.

Any of you guys play with the L5R disks? We were playing disk wars pretty regularly here in Ann Arbor until Mage Knight came on the scene. Seems like I'm the only guy I've met who bought the L5R ones...

Ok, so we tried that scenario again, only this time I took the undead, Mike used Elves as the good guys and Tim used the Uthuk as the bad guys. The end result was about the same - the bad guys won. It was a little different this time though as Tim had to spend some time killing Elves to ensure his victory. The undead also had a little more impact, owing mostly to the Plague from the zombies and to a little fun from the soul sucker (Instant blow 10 to everything within 6" when it dies) which definitely slowed down Tim's advance.
Our suggested improvement is that we stick closer to the scenario's rules and not allow factionless disks. Mike and Tim both had 'em and the number of zip spells (and their effects) was pretty impressive. Tim's Spiderbeast (also factionless) landing on my "home" on turn 1 wasn't any fun either.

I thought it was a good senerio. I should have stuck with my original army though. SPEED SPEED and more SPEED.

We played some scenario last night where the idea was to recover/destroy/protect an artifact. The Uthuk (me) were out to recover it before the Knights (Tim) could destroy it. The Undead (Mike) just wanted to keep it where it was.
The scenario was reasonably good although Tim and I both (unintentionally) broke the rules. I had a 200 point army, he had 150, and Mike got 50 to start but 15 new points every turn. His new points were picked at the start of each turn and brought in the next turn.
I did pretty much what you'd expect - stocked up on spells and really fast guys. I lost a lot of my units (more than half) as Tim and Mike blasted away at me. Ultimately, having two Level II spellcasters was what won it for me - I was able to Twister Tim's most powerful units several times and finally allowed my Invisible Y'llrath to make it back with the artifact.
It was a pretty good scenario, I'd like to try it again sometime as one of the other armies.

Mike's Undead, Tim's Uthuk, and my Elves duked it out in the battle for the hill. The early game was tense - I had lots of archers and Tim charged at me while Mike's undead slowly plodded to the center. I did get to sure aim the elven dragonfly patrol and make 10 arrows hit a single target, but that was about it for the patrol, who spent most of the rest of the game pinned. The archer's kept the uthuk bottled up one side, but Tim charged forward on the other. Both of us began to deal some damage to Mike's army, but the reanimation kept him in the game forever. In the end, we gave up a little after midnight. Tim had been all but eliminated, I was down to less than half my forces and Mike still had reinforcements to bring in. Rather than play it out to it's bitter and drawn out conclusion (deemed likely to be a victory for me, based mostly on my having the familiar and feet of clay to slow down the already slow undead), Mike and I settled on a draw. As far as I could tell, a good time was had by all.

Last night's battle used the "Steal the Bacon" Scenario. Tim played the big monsters guarding everything. Mike and Lou were teamed as Undead and Dragons and Dave and Steve were paired as Elves and Acolytes.
The game got off to a slow start for Tim as Mike's familiar/spellcaster hammered him with feet of clay on each of the first two turns. The Elves and Dragons charged, while the Acolytes tried to get cute with Gate spells and the always popular Brother Dalmu (who was able to put a gate right on top of the bacon thanks to his increased range).
A Physical Adept used the gates but was immediately stomped by the Spider Beast. Steve again used the awesome Brother to cast a twister and dump a soul leech, a manticore, Tyranask Rex and the Spiderbeast all over the undead. The elves and dragons got their wish as combat was joined. Garnoth made short work of his first dragon and several Elven rangers died in short order. The Undead suffered heavy casualties thanks to the Spiderbeast. The Acolytes lost their Physical Adept on the gate, but the gate was left unpinned.
Round three began with the undead blasting away at the Spiderbeast, but it was all to no avail. The Acolytes gated a second Adept to the center, Dalmuu used a vigor and the Adept returned to his home for the victory.
All in all a pretty satisfying game.
Rules Questions
  1. Does the area of the Feet of Clay spell move with the target creature?
  2. Can the Elven Ranger use its ability to stack on other Rangers that are entering as reinforcements (or fdo all reinforcements enter at the same time each turn)?
Other Notes
  • For games dependent on movement, some spells (gate, teleport, alternation) may need to be banned or modified (can't target the staging area of another player or any disk touching it for example)

Tonight's round was pretty good. Dave was playing Elves, Dennis had Uthuk, Tim had Dwarves and I had Acolytes. The Dwarves and Uthuk tangled early and both of them were pretty badly hurt in the process. The Acolytes, who seemed more interested in keeping their Sand Jaws alive than in actually winning, killed many dwarves and a few other disks besides, but in the end, the Jaws died to no less than the Mighty Garnoth. The Uthuk scored first by capturing the Dwarves peasant and running home with it. They left their own peasant out for the Acolytes, but it soon became clear that it was bait. The Acolytes immediately rushed both the Uthuk peasant and their own towards the Elves. When it became clear that nothing could catch the fleet-footed Elves, everyone conceded.

In fairness to Mike, he warned us and stayed a half hour later than he originally planned to. I think Tim is right though - my sneakiness would have paid more of a dividend if the three of them had still been squabbling instead of only two <g>

Maybe we should use a d6 or something to determine who goes first instead of alternating in a set pattern.

On Thursday, 25-May-00 11:47:02 EDT, Tim said

I would have to say that Steve probalby would have won if mike would have stayed in the game. Next time we should use terrain. I think it would make it that much more fun. We should also start a lot eariler than 9:45 or 10:00. This way if someone has to leave it won't disrupt the game quite so much. It would have been a whole different game had Mike been able to stay after 11:30.

Lou, Mike, Tim and I played a rousing game of capture the flag. Each player had three flags to collect, one from each of his opponents staging areas. One disk had to land on the staging area to get the flag. Disks could swap flags any time they were touching. To win, you had to get all three of your flags back to your base.
Steve (Acolytes) and Lou (Dragonkin) quickly agreed that each of them would let the other get his flag uncontested. Meanwhile Tim (Knights) came out hard towards the center of the table, hoping to kill everyone and make flag taking easier. Mike (Undead) came out to crush the Dragonkin. While most of the armies concentrated on using a lot of disks, Steve had few disks but a lot of Invisibility and Displacement spells. He took first flag (from Lou) and attracted some of Tim's ire for his trouble. The outcome of the game was somewhat marred when Mike had to leave early, leaving Lou with a slightly damaged and badly flanked army. Tim moved in for the kill, leaving just a few disks to deal with Steve's magically powerful but otherwise lame army. In the end, it came down to turn order as much as anything. Tim went first on the last turn and was able to pin or kill all of Steve's and Lou's disks. Had Steve had first turn, his highly mobile Fairy Swarm might finally have eluded Tim and been able to bring back the third flag; of course, if Steve had had one more displacement, he could have won that way too.
All told, it was a pretty good game and a decent scenario.

It's official, I'll be running diskwars this Saturday at the Motorcity Con in Novi from 12pm to 8pm. If there are enough people (say 16) I'd like to run a tournament. P.S.--if any of you are interested in gaming friday night I might be able to get to Neutral Ground in Garden City around 8:30 for diskwars or whatever. The demo was cool. There turned out to be five people there. The guy giving the demo, a couple from flint, a kid, and me. I got some Uthukand and more Dwarves and Knights. I also picked up some more Undead for Mike. Also Howard gave us some free flats. I learned how to use terrain disks. They make it quite a bit more interesting.

On Monday, 08-May-00 08:47:15 EDT, Steve said

So how was the demo?

On Saturday, 06-May-00 01:51:20 EDT, Dave said

{Ahem....} Well, I did better than Mike the second game (when Lou showed up & smoked eveyone). The first was Tim, Mike, & myself. Mike's vampire managed to take three of Tim's big-whomper disks on turn #2, which made the rest of the game rather quick... (Again, the elven rangers needed some more refinement--that & we played with only 50 points, which makes anything substantial rather difficult in my opinion.) I think our second game could be one of the fasted on record...(but fun, none the less).

Howard called me to say that his Diskwars Demo *might* be this Saturday. The guy who does them locally called him, he called back and got a machine, so it's kind of up in the air, but I have a feeling it'll work out.

I won't be playing Thursday (Bosnia-bound), so the game will be at Tim's. Howard's garrison is "Deep Woods", obviously a tribute to the mighty elven rangers. I'll see what else I can find out and post it later this week.

We could have been in some real trouble if Mike had a full army.

On Thursday, 27-Apr-00 23:59:23 EDT, Steve D. said

Okay, so Mike, Lou, Tim and I played. We had two teams: Tim and played Good groups (Knights and Acolytes), Lou and Mike played bad guys (Dragons and Undead). The goal was to kill 75 more points than your opponents, center counted for 10 if you were the only one on it. Starting was 6, reinforcements were 6 and armies were 100 pts.
In the early stages, Steve's Acolyte's unleashed a whithering barrage of fireballs (8 in all) forcing the opposition to hide some of its best units behind its weaker ones. Once the battle was finally engaged, Lou basically charged his Dragon hordes at Steve, who had only six units in the game (2 Fairie Swarms, Waiqir, 2 physical adepts and an Iron Golem). Tim interceded and slowed down the rampaging hordes. Meanwhile, his knights began laying down some fire with archery and generally piling on the forces of the undead. Finally, Lou was left with just two units and Mike was completely wiped out. The final turn had to be played and Lou had to be completely eradicated to let Tim and Steve win - it turned out Mike had played with only 75 points and Lou had some spells, so that all they had was 158 pts altogeter).
