The group continues to prepare for the festival of colors. Malz is content primarily to study the spellbook he claimed as prize from the last dungeon which has yet to be opened. He is almost glad when Jameson arrives on Androth's doorstep, for he hopes Jameson will be able to pry the secrets from the tome.
The two of them join the Marquis for an early dinner and a few drinks. The Marquis is very charming and tries to convince the two of them to form an adventuring company under his patronage. His goal is to give Androth something to do besides live in his manor and thus make him more willing to sell it.
Androth leaves town again, his destination unknown, with the explanation that he'll be back soon. He does return and it becomes clear he's travelled to his homeland; he has the wine, finery and gifts to prove it.
Daran pursues more mundane matters and is busy trying to convince townsfolk that Cedric would be a good baron. Harkonen continues to review records in preparation for Elsbeth' departure from the church and Calidon drills his troops.
Lady Elsbeth finds out about the plan to move the orphanage and she and Cedric pay a visit to the temple. Harkonen explains his reasons for moving the orphanage, then asks that Elsbeth clear ten hours on her schedule prior to her marriage and departure from the church. She is visibly shaken at the prospect of leaving the Church and begins sobbing. Cedric, for his part, begins yelling at Harkonen and eventually winds up barred from the temple grounds until he can keep a civil tongue in his head.
By morning, twenty of the temple's auxiliary guards, all of whom were actually town guards, have resigned. Elsbeth puts on a brave face and continues to organize the festival, which seems to be going well. Cedric tells the other members of the company of Harknonen's plan and they are similarly outraged but no one seems to know what to do about it.
The following day the festival finally begins. Androth celebrates by again leaving town while the others try to enjoy the festival. Malz sets Jameson the task of watching the Marquis and his lady, one which he agrees to. As he watches them, he's on hand to see, but, unfortunately, not stop an assassination attempt on Lady Elsbeth. A lone man, wearing the black hood and robes of Lorial leaps from nowhere crying For the truth of Lorial and chops her to the ground with a single blow from a poisoned axe.
Malz reacts quickly and the assassin is dead before he can land a second blow. The members of the guard and of the company converge on the crime scene and are surprised when the Marquis' lady is able to heal Elsbeth of her grevious wounds, but not of the poison which now courses through her veins. Word of the attack reaches Harkonen and he joins them at the guard office.
When he proves unable to cure the poison, Jameson is sent for and quickly brews an antidote. Another heated exchange between Cedric and Harkonen results in two guards being sent to search the temple for evidence. Harkonen easily cows one of the guards but the other will not be silenced and demands to be allowed to search to. Harkonen denies him and the guard declares that he will report this act to Cedric
A search of the temple turns up a single, now empty, vial of the poison which Jameson found on the axe.
Harkonen receives a late visit from the Marquis who retains him to research legal means by which he can
