Something Wicked

2/7/1999

Prelude

Somewhere in the city
A rich bounty to be sure, and just there for the taking.
Are you sure?
I saw it with my own eyes.
Why don't you go get it then?
I would, but I don't think they trust me; it's better that you go

Somewhere in the hills
It was not my fault, I tell you, it was that damn halfling
There is but one consequence for failure.
Please, please, I promise I will not fail you again...
That is one promise I am certain you will keep.

Summary of the Adventure

The company has resolved to return to the treasure vaults of Karvel the mad, but this time they intend to bring a thief. While Calidon was busy tending to his gimpy horse, the rest of the company decided to form themselves into an adventuring group. They alloted themselves (including Calidon) each a 1/5 share of the group and began soliciting for associate members.

Several adventurers applied, including a drunk named Bearoth, a scout named Andivari Shea, a warrior named Draynor and a thief named Jameson Whistler. Of the group, Bearoth was deemed of no worth and was, in fact, given 3 gold pieces by Andivari Shea just to shut him up. Draynor was asked to prove himself by sparring with Calidon. They fought and it appeared to Brother Urbane that Draynor threw the fight at the last minute.

During the closed-door session that followed, Daran split his votes, Calidon voted for and the rest voted nay on Draynor. When Andivari Shea came up, Calidon voted nay on him as well. After some discussion it was decided that Draynor and Andivari Shea could both join the company on a provisional basis. Jameson interrupted the meeting and was also invited.

The group set out and met up with Methir, a halfling warrior, and Zarek, a human minstrel. They then made their way to the vaults. Mithel proved an excellent cook and he and Zarek made the journey more pleasant.

Once entering the vaults, it quickly became clear that Androth's map was not particularly accurate and a new map was started.

The group eventually made their way to a previously unexplored region of the vaults. There were several disagreements about trap doors and treasure chests, but nothing went too far awry. The group managed to kill 3 owlbears and find a magic fountain before they made their way to the riddle room.

There, after a brief scare that the statue would attack them, followed by a fall into a pit that none of them noticed, they finally heard the statue's riddle:

Without a mouth I drink,
without sadness cry
Without goal, I travel,
without wings, I fly.
Without life I'm born,
without water I die.
Without form, I'm formful,
at least to a dreamer's eye.

When they responded "Cloud", the statue turned and fired an arrow into the wall revealing a secret door which led to a spiral staircase leading down. Battered and bloodied, the party prepares to descend further into the depths.

In Character Moment of the Night

Andy: (To Jameson): No sex for you!
Jameison: That's OK, I've still got you...

Calidon: He just insulted me, I want to assault him back (referring to Andy; intent unclear)

Taernac: So what if the Map is off 10' here 20' there? Its not like we can't find our way around...
A moment later, it became clear that the map was pretty much worthless

Player Moment of the Night

Dave: We need a guy who can find traps?
Mick: Don't you have a big dumb ass fighter?
(Momentary confusion, several people look at Mike)
Dave (to Mick): So are you saying you have multiple qualifications

DM: (To Tom): Dude, this is NOT a class!
He had listed himself as a "rogue"

Jaime: You guys must have had a lot of fun last night. You sure made a lot of racket!

Treasure Summary

Not much so far... just what is believed to be a wand, 3 books, and a bunch of used robes.
