Into the Depths

Prelude

Somewhere in Ansalea
Now?
No, not yet
What are we waiting for?
The longer we wait, the weaker they'll be and the more money there will be.
I just want to kill that pointy-eared wimp.
You'll get your chance, just make sure we don't get blamed

Summary of the Adventure

The company continued it's exploration of the Vaults of Karvel the Mad. After falling into a few pits and slaying a few zombies, they encountered Larissa, an elven woman who had apparently been trapped in the catacombs by Karvel himself. She pointed out the path that would take them to his crypt but would not enter herself as his spirit haunted her every hour and she could not bear to see him again.

Entering the crypt, the group soon discovered that it could not touch any of the treasure in the room, due to some sort of magical bending of space around the items. Eventually, they discovered a set of bricks which had been removed from the wall, but had eventually born a message. While some of the group worked hard on a solution, the rest did nothing. The assembled riddle was:
The king and queen will go to war
With footmen, almost half a score
A pair of clergy left and right
Each standing near a fearless knight
A castle and a tower tall
Defend them with a sturdy wall

Correctly surmising that they needed to get a chessboard, they brought one of several in the room to the table and the spectre appeared. The match was fierce with Androth pitting his gaming skill (along with some timely advice from Calidon and Andivari) to good use to defeat the aged wizard.

Once he was defeated, all that remained was to find the treasure. During the search, the company found two dwarves and a human who claimed to have been imprisoned by Larissa. The dwarves were eager for her blood, but stayed their hand at the insistence of Androth and Taernac

As the group gathered treasure, they sent Brother Urbane, Andivari, Methil and Zarek up with the first pile of treasure. They soon discovered that Larissa had exited the vaults in great haste and could not be found. The rest of the company looted the trophy room and turned up several interesting magic items.

The trouble started when magic division was brought up. Urbane insisted that the "associate" members of the group would not get as large a share of treasure as the "stockholders". Harsh words were exchanged and in the end, Methil left the group angry. Cedric, the human they had rescued, joined Andivari and Draynor as they contemplated forming an adventuring group of their own.

Plans for the group's next adventure are mixed: Androth and Taernac are headed off to the Elven lands with a suit of Elven chain. Urbane is taking Calidon back to the vaults to finish looting them. Daran is visiting with the local wizard. Cedric and Andivari are asking several prominent locals about the possibility of performing specific tasks for them.

In Character Moment(s) of the Night

Taernac: Did we check the pits for secret doors?
Brother Urbane: Well, we certainly know where all the pits are at

Player Moment of the Night

Andivari: I check the door for traps
GM: Nothing too suspicious
Androth: Except this one has the potential for a two floor drop.

John (to Keith): Will your character fit into Renaissance France?
Keith: No.
John: Good, because we're trying to get medieval
Joe: Ooh is he going to show up in rubber and carrying a blow torch?

Lou: Tie a rope to Mick (in case of another pit)
Joe: Good ideal (sic), I'll get his hands

John (commenting on missing players): Great, we have to leave all the people we don't trust to watch our backs while we go down the stairs
Joe: Right, see you guys later
John: Huh?
Joe: I'm going down the stairs

Variances in experience points are due to good ideas, roleplaying and use of class abilities.
I've decided to ignore the +10% rule, since I give way over that as a matter of course and it's basically stupid -- might as well just reduce the numbers by 10% given how many people don't get it.
