Behind the Bronze Door

8/1/1999

Prelude

Outside The Tomb
What should we do now?
I'm not sure. We must punish the blasphemers.
How?
Well, we could wait for them to come out, or we could trap them in the tomb. Let us pray!

In the desert
No one attacks the great Fazhil and lives to tell of it. No one.

In the tomb
Yes, yes, he is awakened!

Summary of the Adventure

The company resumed its trek through the abandonded tomb. Continuing past the bronze door, they found a long hallway split by two doors. The doors seemed pointless and speculation was that they were there to break up area of effect spells.

Passing the second door they found an empty bedroom and another room which had obviously served as a pen for some sort of large animal. Both showed signs of recent use, but were vacant. After searching for hidden doors, they returned to the long hallway.

When they opened the first door, they saw a man opening the door at the other end. He released a large wolf, which immediately breathed a cone of frost at them. The presence of a dire wolf in the desert seemed odd, but with him pressing his attack, the company opted to attack, rather than question it.

The wolf was slain and they rushed to the other door only to find that it opened not into the hallway they expected, but into a different hallway. Following that one, they made their way to what looked like some sort of alchemical lab. The most curious thing in the lab was what had once been a man. He lay in a shallow bath of fluid and about half his body had been replaced with fungus.

Leaving the area mostly unmolested, they continued their investigation. The room, they determined, spun when both doors were closed. Malz used a pendulum to measure the exact degree of the turning, which appeared to be 90. Leaving the door to the lab open, they made their way to the other end where they found an altar.

In that room, they were challenged by one of the faithful, who took exception to Urbane's destruction of the altar. A brief scuffle ensued and the company defeated him with little trouble.

Returning to the room, it again rotated and they found themselves in a hallway which led to an ancient storage room. A one-way door there left them back in the original hallway they had entered. They moved back to the rotating room.

From there, they found still another room, which was, apparently, the tomb of the fallen. Searching further, they found a hidden door which led to the actual tomb. Arriving there, they found the sarcophagus which appeared only to be missing the sword.

Taking the sword from Andi, they placed it in the right spot and it began to change from blue to white and eventually grew so bright that all of them were struck unconscious.

Their next memory was waking up in a tent with their wounds healed. There was an older man with them who told them he had found them wandering blind through the desert and had healed them. He offered them his thanks and served them a sumptuous meal before they left. When they left, they found their own horses waiting for them.

Riding back through what should have been a desert, they saw that it was actually a lush paradise. In the mountains, they could see the whole valley had been transformed and the tomb had been restored.

On their way back to Ansalea, they were suddenly attacked by a wyvern. It struck without warning and killed Malz with one sting of its poisonous tale. The rest of the group made short work of it, and they tried to help Malz, then took him back to town, intending to go to the elf lands for help.

In town, they were greeted by Cedric the Short, who bade them stay at the inn while he consulted Pendergrast. The wizened priest raised Malz from the dead and invited them all to dinner. They gave him the portrait of seeing as a gift and he thanked them for their generosity.

GM Notes

Only 5 players this week; why can't my Deadlands game be this small?
Much ado was made when the game was cancelled because I couldn't play; we've had two or three sessions (my game and others) lately with very small and/or very late turnouts. If the GM is accountable, the players have to be too. If you aren't coming, say so. If you've decided to quit playing a particular game, say so. It's a lot better for everyone to know what's going on than for someone to schedule a game, make an adventure and then have no players.
