A Day of Rest

8/8/1999

Prelude

In the Forest
The Great One has deserted us, what shall we do?
He is punishing us for allowing the unfaithful to enter his tomb.
But what can we do?
We must find them and sacrifice them.

At Long Lake
Something seems strange
Yes, the ancient forest is reborn
Really? In whose image?
That is still unclear.

In Ansalea
Psst. How would you like to own a map to the Halls of Alkaden?
Bah! That cult is long dead.
So it is, but their treasure lingers

Summary of the Adventure

The company, inspired by their new found wealth and the coming of Winter, began to construct their own homes in the village of Ansalea. The Baron, through his loyal servant Pendergrast, gave leave for Brother Harkonen to begin building his own abbey, while the others elected to pursue less grandiose schemes. Daran is building a stone tower, Androth is building a cottage and barn, and Calidon is building a fortified burrow.

While recruiting builders to their aid, Calidon was offered a chance to buy a map to the ancient Halls of Alkaden. The seller claimed to have been there and run when his companions fell prey to ghouls. When Calidon's interest wavered, he reminded him the that Halls were reputedly the home of the fabled Sword of Zareth, a two-handed sword of great renown. Calidon dismissed the man as a charlatan, since he believed the sword to be a myth. He finally decided to see if the others were interested, and Androth paid 200 gold coins for the map.

They provisioned themselves for what looked like a two week journey and headed south. Along the way, they stopped at Calidon's birthplace where he gifted his mother with a new cow, then continued on to visit Larissa. She and her minions were doing well and were attempting to wean themselves from the waters of the mysterious fountain. At last, they reached the ruins of the hall and headed directly into the old dungeons.

They were, as promised, immediately set upon by ghouls, which they killed easily. They journied further ito the now ruined hall and slew a troll which the ghouls had apparently used for food. They overcame a few traps by dint of Harkonen's magic and Androth's skills and eventually came to the resting place of the legendary heroes of Alkaden.

They were atttacked by a huge dead warrior whose skeletal body was consumed by living flame. He wielded a two-handed sword and struck with great power, raining blow after blow on Calidon, while the others struggled to defeat him. Magic seemed to be of little worth, as did Calidon's blade. At last, with Calidon near death, the creature was vanquished.

Searching the tombs revealed many treasures, both magical and mundane, including a key. The key opened a previously hidden door into a library. Entering the library, they saw that it was in two sections. One, the larger of the two, held several score volumes and proved to be a source of magical knowledge. The smaller section held but six books, but they revealed the secret fighting techniques fo the cult of Alkaden.

In identifying the items, Daran was struck unconscious for a day by one of the books. When he awoke, he found that his memories were no longer intact and his skill with magic was lessened.

The items were eventually identified and shared out amongst the party.
