The posse heard tell that Harold had headed out for a town called Possum Springs. Shiwana and Virgil decided not to wait on Frank and left that day. The next day, the rest of the posse hit the trail.
When the pair got to Possum Springs, they ran into Fred, the town's cowardly saloonkeeper and Tiberius A. Jones, the town's sheriff and mercantile operator. After talking with Fred for a few minutes, the pair decided to head north. Fred claimed that the town's only railroad spur and telegraph line had been destroyed and the two deputies had disappeared looking for it. The sheriff said Fred was full of it, but the two of them ignored him.
The next day, while they headed for the ruined bridge, the rest of the posse arrived in town. Everyone denied ever having seen Virgil or Shiwana. Some questioning led them to believe that Harold and Kai Low had headed north. Unsure what to do, they decided to head north too, hoping to find Shiwana and Virgil along the way.
