The Road to Alewick

The Hook

The group is on their way to Alewick, hoping to collect a bounty being offered on orcs.

Prelude

Maggie: Are you sure you have to go?
Pegs: Yeah, we could use a big strong man like you here.

The orcs are getting more brazen by the day.
Agreed. I hope we get some new hunters soon.

Summary

After a few last minute attempts by the citizens of Burnby to keep them, the crew decides to load up their wagon and head to Alewick. Loading up the wagon in this case meant Bezoar gathered 10 skeletons in sacks, then used the wand to animate 4 of them and leave them in their sacks in the back of the wagon.

At the end of their first night on the way to Alewick they encountered a trio of humans whose wagon had a broken wheel. One of them had the tools to fix the wheel and a spare wheel but they couldn't lift the wagon enough to remove the wheel. The group helped them and then both parties shared a meal while making plans to go to Alewick together in the morning.

They didn't make it that far. While Valric stood guard with the two drovers, their leader, a man named Aldus, quietly cast a sleep spell which affected the trio. As they slept a dozen kobolds emerged from the shadows and surrounded them.

The kobolds woke them up and told them they'd have to pay a tool for passage. At first it seemed like Stalker might agree but the kobolds got greedy and the battle was joined. Elben and Stalker quickly dispatched two and Bezoar called his skeletons to action. With their skeletal allies, the group reduced the kobolds by about a third in the first round.

Aldus decided to run for it and Valric jumped atop a horse and chased him. The rest of the group was left to deal with things on their own, but Bezoar and Elben proved up to the task and soon only the drovers remained. They hadn't fought and had surrendered first to the kobolds and then to the party. Valric gave up on his chase and returned to the camp empty-handed.

They claimed the cargo from Aldus' cart which, unfortunately, included a chest of skeletal hands. Luckily, only 3 of the 5 escaped and they were quickly destroyed. The other two were locked in the case for "safe-keeping".

Questioning the drovers, Bobert and Jeremiah, revealed that Aldus was in league with the kobolds and it was his job to lure travelers into staying until nightfall so the kobolds could attack them with ease. They claimed they were forced into it and their story rang true. Stalker hired them to be drovers for the group.

They visited the kobold camp and found two women there slain, apparently by Aldus who had taken some of their treasures and fled. They followed him for a time, but eventually his tracks disappeared and they could only find a broken vial nearby.

They salvaged what they could from the kobolds, then headed to Alewick. They checked in with the city guard and then the mayor's office and were given information and a map to find the orcs. It was late, so they headed to the tavern.

They were surprised to see Aldus their laughing and joking with the town guard. Stalker approached and Aldus introduced him as an old friend and traveling companion. They mad some peace while Elben found a spot outside waiting to shoot Aldus. Unfortunately his plan was thwarted by Aldus never leaving the tavern.

In the morning, they learned that Aldus had told a very funny story which made Valric out to be something of a clown. They couldn't find him and made their plans to go visit the orcs.

Bezoar: I dig out about 10 bodies and put 6 in sacks, I then animate 4 and put them in my wagon covered by 4 more sacks.

Bezaor : I leave a note that says "Beware, we killed a rat covered in spores here.

Elben: Do we really have to ride with them things?
Bezoar: No, you can walk.

Elben: Make sure to add grease to the wheel.
Joe: What a gentleman, he suggests lube.

Joe: Don't trust their judgement, they're boneheads.
