But I agree that a climatic battle should require a lot of work and a generous dose of luck to pull everyone through.

A sense of danger helps establish the feel, especially if you are going for a heroic story line. Think about a good action movie, the best ones give a feel that the characters are in danger. And sometimes those movies have a body count.
An adventuring party doesn't have a main character like "Die Hard", it's more like the "Fellowship of the Ring". You head towards Mordor there is a strong chance someone isn't coming home.
