I have surgery on Wednesday. I don't know where I'll be on Thursday. I'm supposed to get out Wednesday, but you never know. Probably I can say on Thursday what I'm doing.

Not necessarily. If the 2nd level adventurer goes solo and and takes on the ogre he will probably be roadkill. Hell, not shielding us from our stupid shit would thin the heard.
But I agree that a climatic battle should require a lot of work and a generous dose of luck to pull everyone through.

I think if no one dies then the threat of death does.

A character doesn't have to die, but I think it should be a possibility. A sense of danger helps establish the feel, especially if you are going for a heroic story line. Think about a good action movie, the best ones give a feel that the characters are in danger. And sometimes those movies have a body count.
An adventuring party doesn't have a main character like "Die Hard", it's more like the "Fellowship of the Ring". You head towards Mordor there is a strong chance someone isn't coming home.

At least once every six session a character should be in a situation where whether they die all comes down to a single high or low even after all mods die roll

How often should someone die in a D&D game? Assume they haven't done anything stupid. Should someone die every time? Every other time?

Sorry guys, I'm not going to be able to play.

I have surgery next week and I don't want to miss it over being sic. Plua, I'm pretty sure my immune system is already compromised so I shouldn't take chances.

At the moment, I feel like total crap. I'm going to try to leave work early and maybe get a nap in. I'll let you know by 4 if I can play tonight. Sorry.

There was a cartoon in Dragon years ago. A giant crate labeled Minotaur with a slot on the side labeled "insert sword her for 475xp". That's kind of how the games feel sometimes.

Didn't some people have issue with being a monster?

What about Werewolf?

Maybe I'll make a list of things I want to include.

I think if death needs to be in the cards that probably leaves out Champions. Maybe I should go with a deadlier version of the airships campaign.

By the way, I may be a little late tomorrow. Rodrick is going to be in a presentation at the high school.

We played Tom's jacked up game, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about.
So, what do you mean by epic? Grand scale? Daring heroics?
Since there are few consequences in most of our games there is generally not much of a sense of danger. Not that I want a character to die, but the lack of the possibility kind of takes away from the feel.

Glad to hear it.

Looks like Sean will be able to play Thursday's if no one objects

There's not much point in me deciding on a story and system if no one wants to play it when I get there.

I think I could make an epic story in any of those. of course, it might be easier in D&D where the system tends to fall away at least a little for all of us.

On Apr 20, 2015 at 04:57 pm Keith said :
True. Because the whole champion of the people can be fairly epic.

I would think deciding on your story would lead you to which system to use. Dead lands for example is a very specific setting, Star Wars a little less so. Or decide a system you want to use then make a story to fit.

The way you set up seekers you just have to remind everyone to keep their character sheets, and a copy with your, and you can pick it up any time.
If you are going to run something else, maybe expand on what you mean by epic to give us some idea of what kinda character we would need to make.

I kind of feel like I want to run Seekers a few more times and then try to run something more epic with a big story arc, but maybe not D&D or Pathfinder.

I'm thinking Champions, Star Wars, Deadlands, or maybe Super Science and Sorcery (so post-apocalypse). Does anyone have any preferences, positive or negative?

Your preference could be that we keep playing Seekers.

Joe's schedule changed and he can't play on Wednesday anymore.

I'm going to run next week because I have surgery the week after. Surgery is on Wednesday but I'm not sure about recovery.
