Speaking of looking things up, it occured to me that 1000 seemed like a low base number of XPs, especially since I was personally below half my hits. I don't have stats on everything, but the Frost Giant Sorceror was at least 18th level (maybe more) and Frost Giants have an ECL of 4 making him a level 22 encounter. Not even counting the other 500 or so members of his crew, he's about 38,400 (level 22 vs. 16th level average). That would have worked out to more than 6000 apiece not even counting his buddies.
Even if the logic is that the cards feed your total, that's pretty weak xps.
