I think that the party should be "troubleshooters" for the new King. That is the King decides what we should do and where we should go--that I think solves the what should we do next delimma. Possible ideas might be, investigate the southern kingdoms...diplomatic envoys to kingdom x...recover the lochnar for the benefit of the kingdom...escort blah-blah blah.
Level progression should be slower, but steady...if you are concerned that we are too high, then maybe we should all start new characters at a lower levels...
