#28 #28 The Undead Horde

The Hook

Many parts of the undead horde have been destroyed, but they just keep coming.

Prelude

Soon it will be night again and they will learn the meaning of fear.

Summary

The town and their heroes breathed a huge sigh of relief as the arrival of the sun led to the departure of most of the dead. Of course, they knew they would return at nightfall and then the battle would be on again.

Most of the heroes attended a strategy meeting at the Dancing Wolf while Arric tended to the wounded at the hospital. As twilight arrived, some strangers arrived at the tavern. Bornon felt they were suspicious enough to merit attention, so he retrieved Arric and explained he thought at least one of them was a vampire.

Arric arrived and wasted not time channeling the power of the Blessed Attendant. One of the creatures was destroyed and the other wounded. The survivor launched itself out the window and took flight, pausing only to launch a fireball through the same window. Arric again called on the bright lady for aid and most of those in the tavern survived the fireball.

The group left the tavern hoping to find the vampire, but they found other undead instead. A squad of spectres had arrived as had a deathless sorceror. The warriors engaged the spectres and left the deathless for Ropp and Dragan to attend to. Luckily, they had help from Arric and Alon. the battle was tough for both groups as a there were a half-dozen spectres and only BAMF could strike them fully; the others struggled with the incorporeal dead.

It didn't take long for them to end the spectres, but the deathiess was tougher and by the time it was on the ropes, it was joined by a lich shade. The battle was very tough with the sorceror making strong use of it's rod of withering and ability to bestow negative levels. When it was done, BAMF had been reduced to the strength of a less than average man and was weak from battle.

The tide changed when the sorcerer was finally killed and they could focus on the shade. With only one opponent left and Alon having added a wooly rhinoceros to the mix made for short work. As they paused for healing and restoration, a fireball exploded in the midst of the group engulfing everyone but Alon and Ropp in flame.

Alon and Dragan both fired back at the wizard, who responded by disappearing. Arric give Bornon truesight. The group quickly drove the vampire to gaseous form, but it escaped. Bornon was able to follow it until it entered a hollow tree.

Ropp pursued it, as he was the only on who could fit, but there was a maze of tunnels. He was attacked by giant spiders and slew them, but by then the vampire had escaped and he was forced to give up the pursuit.

Joe: Or you could mount the rhino.
Jim: Ropp's mounted a lot of things, might as well add a rhino to the list.
Joe: So Ropp is riding a charging rhino across the field while shooting missiles.
